인생에서 고난을 거의 겪지 않은 사람은 세상에 덜 물들고,
반면에 많은 역경을 헤쳐나간 사람은 종종 속임수에 능숙해진다.
군자는 지나치게 영리하고 계산적인 것보다 소박하고 조금 느릿한 것이 낫고,
교활하고 엄격하기보다 느긋하고 자유로운 것이 낫다.

 

Those who have faced few hardships in life are less tainted by the world,
while those who have weathered many storms often become skilled at deception.
A noble person is better off being plain and a bit slow than overly clever and calculating,
and better off being easygoing and free than crafty and severe.

Office Mini-Scene: “The Overqualified Barista”

Mina:
Why does that barista look like he’s solving geopolitical issues while steaming milk?

Chris:
He used to work in corporate. Survived fifteen restructurings, three toxic bosses, and one merger from hell.
Now he can read people’s lies just by watching them order a latte.

Mina:
Okay, but why did he stare into my soul when I said “just a little syrup”?

Chris:
Because you meant three pumps. He knows. He’s seen everything.

Mina:
What about you? Why is he smiling at you?

Chris:
Because I ordered plain black coffee.
Simple, honest, zero deception. I’m basically a saint in his eyes.

Mina:
…So the moral is: be simple or be judged by a barista who’s seen too much?

Chris:
Exactly. Simplicity is peace. Complication is extra charge.
